Fades, Tapers & Classic Cuts: A Raleigh Men's Guide
· 4 min read
Not sure what to ask for? A quick plain-English guide to the most-requested men's cuts at our Raleigh barber shop.
If you've ever sat down and blanked on what to call the cut in your head, you're not alone. Here's the shorthand our barbers use. A taper keeps length through the sides and gradually shortens toward the neckline — clean and conservative. A fade takes that blend all the way down to the skin for a sharper contrast.
Fades are described by where the shortest point sits. A low fade starts the blend just above the ears and is the most subtle. A mid fade starts higher for a bit more contrast. A high fade drops the short part well up the side for a bold, modern look. None is 'better' — it's about how much contrast you want and how often you're willing to come back to keep it sharp.
A classic scissor cut keeps natural length and texture up top, ideal for a timeless, grown-man look that doesn't need product to work. A flat top is exactly what it sounds like — cut level across the top — and it takes a real barber with a steady hand and a good eye to keep it truly flat. A crew cut is the short, low-maintenance cousin: tidy, easy, and always in style.
What you wear on top changes the conversation too. A little length with a low fade gives you a pomp you can style up; matching scissor length all around reads more classic and professional. Tell your barber how much time you actually spend on your hair in the morning and they'll steer you toward a cut that looks good with that much effort — not more.
Add a beard trim and lineup and the whole look pulls together; a sharp cut with a shaggy beard only does half the job. If your hairline or beard edges have gotten away from you, that's exactly the kind of thing a straight-razor lineup fixes in a couple of minutes.
Not sure which suits you? Tell us how you wear it day to day and we'll point you the right way. Reading Raleigh men's hair and matching it to the right cut is the job.
First time at this barbershop, and it was great. My last haircut was 6 months ago, so I brought a challenge for them, lol. But I got a great haircut, shave with hot towels thrown in, and my mustache that reaches my chin was trimmed to perfection for the first time ever.
